About This Project
Ornamental Olive Tree - Commissioned in Fibrous Plaster
During the first half of 2017 Stevensons of Norwich were commissioned to assist with the development of a most unusual olive tree decorative feature to be manufactured and installed in an important London residence.
The project began with our artists producing a full size drawing showing the setting out of the olive tree. The intention behind the drawing was to configure the branches, twigs and leaves of the tree in such a manner as to convey their complexity and at the same time achieve efficient mould usage.
Once the drawing had been approved our artists modelled all the components necessary to make up the trunk, branches and leaves of the tree in clay.
From the clay models moulds were produced by our craftsmen from which the sections of the tree were to be cast in fibrous plaster.
The whole tree ensemble was then produced in eight sections in our Norwich factory prior to being delivered in one consignment to site in London.
The sections were then applied to a stairwell in the London residence to form the wonderful plaster olive tree. The approximate dimensions of the tree are 5.5m x 4m.
The operation as a whole involved many of the important Stevensons skills including drawing, modelling, mould making, manufacturing and the site installation of a challenging and interesting decorative detail.
