Study Ceiling

Stevensons of Norwich designed a coffered barrel ceiling with an inter lacing rope detail for a grand Study at an overseas private residence.

The ceiling proposal was developed by our in-house design team and handmade at our Works in Norwich prior to being shipped international and installed by our team.

The rope detail was modelled from scratch and cast integral to the coffers, giving a seamless finish to the design.

Bespoke Decorative Plasterwork

Stevensons of Norwich were approached to manufacture the highly ornate decorative ceiling features and bespoke ceiling paneling, as well as cornices and wall panels for this high-end renovation in West London.

After our Design & Workshop drawings were approved by the Client, each element was handmade at our Works in Norwich ahead of transportation to London for installation.

The principal ceiling features are made up using a number of our existing Decorative Ceiling designs, including our DC24 - Salzburg Floral Decorative Plaster Ceiling Feature and our DC20 - French Empire Ceiling Decoration.

Complete Theatre Plasterwork Restoration

Stevensons of Norwich were responsible for the entire restoration, repair and in places, replacement of the original decorative and heritage plasterwork.

Numerous original architectural and decorative elements were brought to our Works in Norwich to assist with the specialist process of matching and replicating the plasterwork ahead of the new casts being transported to London for installation by our team.

Despite the numerous challenges of 2020, the project at The Theatre Royal proved an interesting and exciting environment to work and we look forward to our next theatre restoration project.

Royal College of Music

Bespoke Decorative Plasterwork

Stevensons of Norwich were awarded the prestigious contract to supply and install bespoke decorative plasterwork to The East Courtyard Project at the Royal College of Music, Kensington, London.

The bespoke elements were designed by classical architects, John Simpson Architects, prior to being handmade, from scratch, by our Chief Modeller and cast by our craftsmen at our Works in Norwich.

The works included the manufacture and installation of bespoke columns, corbels and staff bead arches to the new Entrance Hall and triple height Foyer. In the new state of art multi-functional Performance Area, we manufactured and installed the bespoke coffered ceiling, decorative plaster cornices and corbels.

The East Courtyard Project adjoins the Grade 1 Listed Royal College of Music, that itself sits opposite the Royal Albert Hall. The new spaces have been designed to blend seamlessly with the surrounding architecture and enhance the Royal College of Music performance capabilities and international standing.

Hong Kong

Private Residence, Hong Kong

Bespoke Domed Plaster Ceiling

Stevensons were approached by Hong Kong based designers, House of Beast, to assist in the design development and manufacture of a complex and highly decorative lattice dome and up-light cornice for a project in a prime residential apartment.

Once our Draughtman and Chief Modelers drawings had been approved by the Client, the lattice dome pattern and acanthus leaf cornice were created from scratch by our in-house sculptors before the new mould was created.

The bespoke lattice dome was handmade by our craftsmen at our Works in Norwich, prior to our Logistics team organising the bespoke timber shipping crate and international shipping to Hong Kong.

Grade II Listed Property, Little Venice

Bespoke Decorative Plasterwork

Stevensons were approached to manufacture and design a range of bespoke plasterwork for this Grade II Listed Property in Little Venice, London. The bespoke work included raised and fielded wall panels, decorative plaster cornices, and bespoke arches with staff-bead detailing across the ground and first floors.

The choice of the decorative plasterwork reflects the heritage of the property, whilst the bespoke elements contribute to creating contemporary interior spaces. 

Once our draughtsmans design and setting out drawings were approved by the Client, the mouldings were handmade by our craftsmen at our Works in Norwich, prior to installation by our London based installation team.

Poundbury, UK

Royal Pavillion

Architectural Stonework Mouldings

Stevensons of Norwich worked extensively on the new Royal Pavilion complex in Poundbury, Dorset, providing Stevensons-Stone® exterior architecture across the building, including on the cupola that adorns the top of this imposing structure.

Stevensons were commissioned to produce a substantial range of products for the project along with the cupola, including 6m high fluted Ionic columns, curved window and door architraves, balustrading, cornices and frieze details. Produced in a Portland stone finish, Stevensons-Stone® allowed for finely crafted detailed to be added across the building, and reduced the loading on the structure significantly compared to natural stone.

Bespoke Decorative Plasterwork

We were delighted to be involved in this interesting project, working with a leading traditional architect to produce detailed bespoke decorative plasterwork as per their designs.

Stevensons handmade and installed two guilloche patterned coffered ceilings, bespoke fluted Corinthian pilasters and a large decorative classical overdoor. The patterns for the bespoke works were all created by our in-house sculptors before we created the new moulds and commenced the casting.

Throughout the property, our National Trust Georgian cornices were specified and along with the bespoke items, installed by our experienced team.

The Grand Hall, Queen Mary University of London

Plasterwork Survey

Built in 1936, The Grand Hall at the Queen Mary University of London is used regularly for both lectures and drama productions. Due to its age and the detailed façade reliefs by Eric Gill, Stevensons were invited to complete a plaster survey to ascertain the current state of the plasterwork.

Working with a structural engineer, a thorough survey was undertaken, including a detailed inspection of the fibrous plaster ceiling and the insulation boards behind it, which were removed, examined, and replaced. Pressure testing found the overall structure to be in a good condition, and a ABTT safety certificate was granted.

Bespoke Plaster Moulding

A more unique project for our artists, Stevensons of Norwich were commissioned to assist in the development of a plasterwork olive tree decoration, for installation in the stairwell of a private London residence.

Developed entirely by our in-house Drawing Office, the decorative panel started out as a full-scale drawing, allowing the artists to configure the tree branches to effectively convey the trees complexity, while also achieving efficient mould usage. This was then transformed into a clay mould, from which 8 individual sections were cast in fibrous plaster. The sections were connected on-site, with the resulting plasterwork panel measuring an impressive 5.5m x 4m.

Beach Hotel, Russia

Stevensons-Stone® Ceiling Installation

Requiring a bespoke ceiling for the hotels pool and spa area which provided a contemporary look with an attractive, scalloped surface, the designers of the Beach Hotel in Russia commissioned Stevensons of Norwich to create this impressive, 75-section ceiling.

Designed by our in-house artists, the scalloped design was cast in Stevensons-Stone®, a material ideal for a pool environment and capable of being moulded into a finely detailed design. The ceiling was shipped securely to Russia in individual sections, where, due to the bespoke nature of the moulding, we supervised installation by local installers.

Stevensons-Stone® Building Façade

Working with the Landry Design Group of Los Angeles, Stevensons of Norwich have manufactured and installed a complete architectural building façade for a major private residence in Singapore.

Utilising our own Stevensons-Stone® material in a bespoke soft cream finish, Stevensons moulded the decorative elements of the façade, including cornice, window surrounds, brackets, balustrading, columns and detailed decorative panels. Thanks to the weight benefits of Stevensons-Stone®, the façade was easily installed using stainless steel dowels and brackets.

Educational Centre

Stevensons-Stone® Exterior Cornice

Stevensons-Stone® has been used to create new cornice and arch infills for the Educational Centre in Suffolk. With traditional stone architecture being too heavy for the building structure to support, Stevensons of Norwich cast the new cornice in our own Stevensons-Stone® material, which cut the weight by roughly ten times.

Manufactured in a white marble finish, the new cornice was produced and installed onto the eaves and pediment, along with arched infills above and around the first floor windows. By using Stevensons-Stone®, the project was completed as planned, without needing to reinforce the building structure.

Plaster Vaulted Ceiling Installation

Stevensons have completed a specialist decorative plaster ceiling project for a large country house in the Cotswolds, designing and installing an impressive traditional plaster vaulted ceiling.

Working to the clients specifications, our in-house Drawing Office designed a vaulted plaster ceiling for an interior corridor, which was built on-site using traditional lath and plaster techniques. The result gives the corridor a natural appearance and a soft texture, thanks to the lime plaster used to construct it.

Westminster City Council

Bespoke Stevensons-Stone® Mould

As part of their premises refurbishment, Westminster City Council commissioned Stevensons of Norwich to produce new castings of their Heraldic Lion logo, to be displayed outside the entrance to the building.

Using the existing stone lions, which had become damaged due to age and weathering, our craftsmen restored them to a state where a mould could be taken, into which Stevensons-Stone® was poured and cast into the shape of the original pair. Once cast, the new faux stone logo was finished by Angel Interiors, who applied the painted detailing, before being installed outside the building entrance by our team for the official re-opening.

St Paul's Church, Clapham

Lath and Lime Plaster Restoration

After a partial collapse of the nave lath and plaster ceiling within this community church, Stevensons were invited to complete a ceiling survey and report on the overall condition.

Close inspection revealed that a combination of age and water ingress had affected the integrity of the ceiling, and a plan for repair was drawn up. Through the use of stainless steel fixings, the existing laths were secured, and the damaged section restored using traditional lime plaster techniques.

Ballroom, Chateau Impney Hotel

Plaster Ceiling Survey & Securing

Used for weddings and important functions, the Ballroom at the Chateau Impney Hotel is designed to make an impression. With the ceiling showing signs of distress, Stevensons were requested to complete a survey of the ceiling and surrounding cornice for safety reasons.

Our surveyors identified damage to the ceiling due to age and water ingress, which had led to visible deterioration of the ceiling surface. While physical repairs were not needed, the supporting structure no longer held the ceiling in its original position to secure the ceiling and bring it back to the horizontal, stainless steel fixings and galvanised wires were introduced into the supporting structure.

Theatre Survey & Restoration

Occupying its current site since 1837, the majestic Theatre Royal in Newcastle underwent extensive renovations in 2011 across the entire building, with Stevensons playing a major role in the restoration of the plasterwork in the main theatre.

Constructed from fibrous plaster, the balcony fronts, proscenium arch and ceiling required a thorough integrity survey, which identified areas which needed strengthening, and in some cases, in situ repairs to the plaster surface took place. To the rear of the stalls, Stevensons replaced the existing ceiling with a new fibrous plaster design, which was cast in Norwich and transported to Newcastle in sections, where each section was joined seamlessly to a supporting grid.

Stevensons-Stone® Architectural Mouldings

Stevensons of Norwich have completed the design, manufacturing and installation of numerous architectural mouldings for a large villa in the Middle East, utilising our own Stevensons-Stone® material.

Our in-house Design Office worked closely with the client throughout the process, designing and co-ordinating the look of the building façade, including elements such as columns, cornice, corbels and arches, as well as working on elements installed within the villa, which were cast in fibrous plaster.

Thanks to the benefits of Stevensons-Stone®, the clients installation time was significantly shorter than using a traditional stone façade.

Rocket Theatre

Barrel-Vaulted Ceiling Survey & Repair

Built in the early 20th Century and regularly used for lectures and events by the London Metropolitan University, the Rocket Theatre contains an impressive barrel-vaulted fibrous plaster ceiling. After overall 100 years in service, concerns were raised about the integrity of the ceiling, and Stevensons were invited to complete a ceiling survey.

Our thorough on-site survey found a number of defects, including sections which needed repair, and areas where additional fixings and reinforcements were required. Stevensons were invited to complete these repairs, casting new plaster sections where required, and reinforcing the existing ceiling panels. Upon completion of the restoration, a structural surveyor granted the ceiling an ABTT certificate, declaring it safe for public use.

Interior Plasterwork Design

Stevensons of Norwich were invited to manufacture and install plasterwork for a complete redesign of an apartment in Hertfordshire. Comprised of numerous elements, this project produced an impressive effect from the simple combination of designs.

The large decorative ceiling which dominates the room was made by combining three standard enrichments from our catalogue, producing a smart and completely unique design. The ceiling was further enhanced by a central ceiling rose, and framed with plaster cornice, with sections of the room picked out with elegant panel moulds to complete the overall look.

Russian Orthodox Cathedral, Knightsbridge

Lath and Lime Plaster Restoration

During a major refurbishment of the Knightsbridge Russian Orthodox Cathedral, the contractor identified that the traditional lime plaster ceilings and walls were in need of potential repair. Stevensons of Norwich were invited to complete a thorough plaster survey of the building so that the refurbishment could resume.

As a result of the survey, Stevensons identified structural issues, and confirmed that significant repairs were needed. The contractor appointed Stevensons to complete these repairs, which involved in situ lath and plaster surface integrity repairs and reinforcement of the fixing structure.

Library, Felbrigg Hall

Lath and Lime Traditional Ceiling Installation

One of Norfolks many National Trust properties, the Felbrigg Hall estate has a wide range of historic plasterwork. Stevensons were invited to install a new ceiling in the Halls library to maintain the historic setting, the instruction was to create the ceiling using traditional lath and lime plaster methods, as would have been the case when the library was originally built.

Our team of expert craftsmen achieved this by forming three coats of lime plaster onto the lath background. Once complete, plain plaster mouldings were applied to complete the look.

Grade 1 Listed Building, Park Lane

Bespoke Plasterwork Restoration

Stevensons of Norwich have completed an extensive renovation of a private residence located on the prestigious Park Lane in London, taking previously disused rooms and giving them a new lease of life.

Working from historic photos as the inspiration, our team developed a complete redesign for some of the largest rooms within this Grade I Listed Building, which was then replicated throughout the existing rooms. The design work involved highly detailed cornice, an ornate coffered ceiling, an elaborate enriched cove, fluted pilasters and much more, all designed and manufactured by our experienced craftsmen.

Stoke Rochford Hall

Plaster Ceiling Reproduction

After a fire seriously damaged the property in 2006, Stevensons of Norwich worked to reinstate the plasterwork within Stoke Rochford Hall which had been destroyed by the fire across four major rooms The Grand Hall, The Library, The Tudor Room and the Rochford Room.

Using surviving fragments from the fire and historic plans, Stevensons designers crafted detailed moulds to restore the 1841 built building back to its original Gothic style. The destroyed lime plasterwork was replaced with fibrous plaster casts of the reconstructed designs, with the wall plaster also reinstated using traditional methods.

This faithful reproduction of the lost plasterwork within Stoke Rochford Hall earned Stevensons of Norwich the prestigious Plaisterers Trophy in 2008 for outstanding works both off and on site, with the Judges commenting that it would be a disservice to all the craftsmen and apprentices involved not to honour this project with an award.

Bespoke Domed Plaster Ceiling Design

Requiring an elaborate plaster dome as the focal point of the residences Grand Hall, the client requested Stevensons to design plasterwork befitting the property. Working with our in-house Drawing Office, a dome was designed, along with enriched circular cornice, above an ornate soffit.

Once a design had been agreed, the plasterwork was moulded in our factory, before being shipped directly to the property in Spain, where metalwork had been pre-installed, ready for the impressive plaster ceiling to be mounted onto.

St Martin in the Fields

Lime Plaster Ceiling Restoration

One of Trafalgar Squares landmark buildings, the 18th Century Anglican church, St Martin in the Fields, underwent a major refurbishment in 2007, during which Stevensons undertook significant restoration work on the existing plasterwork.

After an initial survey of the current state of the plasterwork, repairs were made in situ to the existing lime plaster ceiling, as well as the highly detailed nave barrel vault ceiling. As part of the refurbishment, a new plaster dome was designed and installed, along with finely detailed decorative features across the church interior.

Grade 1 Listed House, Oxfordshire

Traditional Lime Plasterwork Installation

Wishing to avoid the regularity of modern materials and maintain a traditional, softer line and texture to the property, the client requested Stevensons to install both fibrous plaster and traditional lime plaster ceilings and walls throughout this medieval house.

Working to the clients specifications, Stevensons completed on-site lime plasterwork installations for ceilings and walls, with the stand-out part of the project being the vaulted ceiling in the corridor, surrounded by traditional lime plaster walls. The overall effect gave the property a warmer, and more traditional feel than a modern plasterer could achieve.

Birmingham Town Hall

Lime Plasterwork Securing & Restoration

A landmark of Victoria Square in Birmingham, the 19th Century built Town Hall recently underwent a major restoration, transforming this majestic building into a new concert hall format.

As part of the restoration, Stevensons undertook repairs to the lime plaster walls and ceilings, which included securing the existing plasterwork, fixing any defects, and where required, recreating sections using traditional techniques. This was an extensive lime plaster repair project, which ultimately restored the historic site, while keeping its traditional look and feel.

Lime Plaster Ceiling Securing

Whilst contractors were completing maintenance on the roof, Stevensons were invited to carry out repairs on the ornate lime plaster ceiling within Senate House at the University of Cambridge.

Although the survey did not show up any major defects, fixing points were reinforced with stainless steel fixings, and fibrous plaster decorative elements were checked for security. Once the reinforcements were complete, the ceiling was certified as safe for public use.

Bank of Scotland

Plaster Ceiling Repair

As part of a larger repair contract to the Bank of Scotlands building in Edinburgh, Stevensons undertook the repair and partial replacement of the stunning ceiling in the imposing Bryce Hall. A room the full height of the building, Bryce Hall had been converted over the years to include additional floors and dividing walls, destroying sections of the plasterwork in the process.

To identify the areas that were in need of repair, a survey was completed, before in situ repairs took place, along with reinforcement of the fixings. In total, approximately one third of the ceiling needed to be replaced, therefore new fibrous plaster panels were cast and installed to restore the ceiling to its former glory.

Barrel-Vaulted Plaster Ceiling Installation

An impressive barrel-vaulted plaster ceiling provides an eye-catching focal point to this stunning swimming pool and dining area, manufactured and installed by Stevensons of Norwich.

Installed within a private residence in Suffolk, this large-scale barrel-vaulted ceiling was made in individual fibrous plaster sections in our Norwich factory, before being transported to the site for installation. A secondary metal grid was installed within the building, onto which the sections were attached, and finished by our craftsmen.

The Bullring Shopping Centre

Shopping Centre Development

As part of the new Bullring shopping centre project in Birmingham, Stevensons of Norwich undertook a substantial package of work, utilising fibrous plaster, GRG (glass-reinforced gypsum) and our own Stevensons-Stone® material as requested by the designers.

A stylish white cladding can be found throughout the shopping centre, cast by Stevensons using fibrous plaster and GRG to the designers specifications. Stevensons-Stone® was used extensively across the centre for shop-front decoration, pilasters and cornice designs, produced in a range of finishes including Portland Stone, Sandstone, Limestone and a unique Stainless Steel finish thanks to the durability of the material and fine detailing available to the designers, we continue to work with the Bullring to develop new and existing shops.

Our initial installation in 2003 was awarded the prestigious Plaisterers Trophy, with the Judges commenting that we had risen to every challenge and have delivered their contribution to a new benchmark for shopping centre development.

Madrid, Spain

Hotel Puerta América

Bespoke Stevensons-Stone® Design

Involving nearly 20 architects, the Hotel Puerta América in Madrid is a unique project, with each of the eight floors presented in radically different styles. Stevensons were involved in more than one area across the hotel, and worked extensively on the lobby on the eighth floor.

The designers vision of the lobby involved radial walls emanating from the lifts, within which are placed hundreds of individual fibre optic lights - the lighting reacts to the colour of the clothing worn by the guest leaving the lift into the lobby. Stevensons-Stone® was chosen as the best material to manufacture the walls from, with its moulding precision allowing for the hundreds of pre-formed holes for the lighting to be placed accurately.

Coliseum Theatre, London

Complete Theatre Restoration

Stevensons were involved in a large scale restoration and refurbishment project of the Coliseum Theatre in London, one of the capitals largest theatres. The project involved the restoration of much of the historic plasterwork, including the main auditorium dome.

Initially, a survey of the existing plasterwork was completed, which identified repairs to be completed on the central dome, balcony fronts and throughout the front-of-house areas. Wherever possible, in situ repairs were completed, however in cases where damage was more substantial, plasterwork was replaced with copies of the original designs.

Manchester City Art Gallery

Lime Coffered Ceiling Restoration

During an extension project to the Manchester City Art Gallery, the nearby Athenaeum building was incorporated into the site. Stevensons were invited to undertake repair work on the lime plaster ceiling in the Athenaeum, as well as complete plasterwork repairs within the existing gallery itself.

A key part of this project was to maintain consistency between any repairs and the existing ceiling particular focus was given to the composition of the lime mix to match the existing Athenaeum coffered ceiling.

Where possible, replacement was avoided, however deterioration had occurred and some decorative elements had been destroyed, which required our craftsmen to cast brand new enrichments for the historic ceiling. The surviving sections were re-secured, and the new sections attached seamlessly, preserving the look of the building.

Hitchin Priory

Vaulted Plaster Ceiling Installation

As part of a site-wide restoration project, Stevensons installed an impressive vaulted plaster ceiling in the corridor of the refurbished Hitchin Priory hotel.

Installed within the Grade 1 listed building, the fibrous plaster vaulted ceiling leaves a lasting impression on visitors to the hotel. Stevensons cast the fibrous plaster ceiling in our factory, before installing the smooth plaster ceiling on-site, supporting it with a secondary metal grid attached to the main building structure above.

Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace

Bespoke Design & Restoration

As part of a larger restoration project by the Royal Collection Trust, Stevensons of Norwich were invited to renovate the Queens Gallery within the grounds of Buckingham Palace.

For the impressive Lecture Theatre within the Gallery, Stevensons designed a bespoke ceiling rose, which was mounted within a striking central pendentive ribbed plaster dome, set within a perfect square. The walls within the Lecture Theatre included plaster arches and columns, and the room was finished with a range of ventilation rosettes. Alongside interior work, we used our own Stevensons-Stone® material to cast new exterior cornice, and an ornate sign for the building entrance.

Our work on the Queens Gallery received awards recognition upon completion, with the Judges commenting that the geometry was very difficult, but the effect, carried out perfectly, was well worth it, and noting that Stevensons carried out the best single piece of plasterwork seen this year: the enriched lintel and brackets to the doorway leading from the stair into the entrance lobby.

Royal Exchange Theatre

Plaster Ceiling Dome Restoration

As a result of a bomb blast nearby, the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester suffered significant structural damage, causing major plasterwork damage throughout the building. Stevensons were appointed to undertake the plasterwork repairs, including the reinstatement of the large central dome.

Where possible, surface level damage was repaired in situ, such as for decorative wall panels and the two smaller domed ceilings. However, due to the proximity of the blast, certain sections required complete replacement, including the large central dome. Reconstructed in our Norwich factory, the impressive plaster dome framework was delivered to the site in 700 sections, which were assembled and installed by Stevensons within the restored theatre.

Our extensive work on the Theatre was recognised with an award, about which the Judges commented that Stevensons of Norwich Ltd had a clear understanding of the best approach to every condition to restore what must have appeared total chaos. The quality of the work appeared faultless.

Landmark Hotel

Complete Plasterwork Restoration

Featuring highly detailed Victorian plasterwork throughout, the former British Rail offices in London were restored to their full glory with the opening of the Landmark Hotel. Stevensons were requested to assist with the overhaul, restoring the extensive plasterwork back to its original state.

Noting damage to plasterwork from impacts, water ingress and progressive neglect, our team restored the existing plasterwork where possible, and where significant damage had been sustained, cast identical replacements. This extensive project included both restoration and new elements, and covered enriched cornices, beam cases, friezes, columns and elaborate decorative ceilings the end result only enhances the hotels five-star reputation.

Grenadines

Private Residence, Mustique

Bespoke Plasterwork Design

Constructed in a Mughal style, the Great House on the island of Musitque presented a unique architectural challenge for our team of craftsmen, with an extensive project of plasterwork created for both the interior and exterior of the property.

Designed to reflect authentic Mughal detail from the Akbar, Shah Jahan and Jahangir, the plasterwork across the site required our team to immerse themselves in Mughal architecture, followed by a year long period of moulding and installation. Plasterwork created for the property included panel moulds, arches, porticos, columns and more, installed across the Great House and the Hidden Garden.
